I Read My Horoscope Daily and Here’s How It Changed My Life

Life: It can be a huge confusing mess sometimes, can’t it? And while it will always find a way (sorry), there are those days when you just don’t know what’s going to happen next, where you’re headed, or if you’re going to make it to your reasonable 9PM bedtime without breaking down into tears and screeching “what do you want, universe? Just what the hell do you want?”

These are the days momma told you about and, girl, I’ve had more than a few in the past couple of months. Now that I’m 34 and seeing all those “here’s what you must do before you turn 35” memes, sometimes the pressure just gets to be too much and I can’t afford therapy more than once a week. (And also I think my therapist prefers it that way, TBH.)

So here’s what I’ve been doing. Every morning I get up, try to eat a bowl of oatmeal (it doesn’t always happen although I’m assured that it’s good for me), and sit down to read my horoscope.

Get personal guidance in love, money and more for the next 12 months.

Now, before you start side-eyeing me, let me tell you a fact: I didn’t always believe in horoscopes. And, to be honest, I’m still not so sure that the stars are talking directly to me when I pore over the day’s astrological wisdom to see what the next 24 hours has in store. But you know what else? I don’t really care. And here’s why.

First of all, reading my horoscope every morning has become a fun part of my day. And if there’s one thing many experts will agree on, it’s that getting yourself into an enjoyable routine will help you prepare against any incoming storms. Sure, life will throw you a curveball every few minutes, but if you’ve got a strong foundation of behaviors to go off, you’re probably going to be a little bit more chill when it happens. I know I am. I don’t drink coffee, so my new rule is that I don’t handle any dramas until I’ve read whether I’m going to be visited by a kind stranger or struggle with conversations about money, today. I don’t always have to agree, but it’s always an interesting start to my day.

Second, horoscopes can offer guidance. Listen, I’m not taking any of this as gospel — although, of course, you can; live your life — but sometimes reading my horo in the morning will help me focus on the issues I’m dealing with my life. Take the example about money, for instance. I’m a freelancer so I’m always concerned about whether I’ve invoiced, cashed my checks, and saved enough money for taxes. I’ve gotten a lot better about all of this, but on the days that my star sign is warned to be careful with financial ventures, I just think about it a little harder. Maybe, I think on these days, as I decide whether to purchase lunch or make it at home, I’ll just brown bag it. And maybe I’ll wait until my next payday before I purchase whatever new gadget I’ve been moving in and out of my cart on Amazon for the past few days. And you know what? My wallet is better for it. I’m not going to die if I spend a little less. In fact, with the encouragement of the cosmos, I’m getting better at self-control every day.

Ditto when my horoscope tells me to focus on communication or make some extra time for my loved ones. It’s something I’m always working on. So when that stuff comes up, I just know that it’s a good time to text my husband and ask if he’s having a good day at work. Of course, I check to make sure his doesn’t say “be overly suspicious of people telling you they love you for no reason today. They may want something.” (That something is usually take-out.)

And you know what? Sometimes it is nice to think that the universe is looking out for you. I’m a hardcore skeptic of all things supernatural (although I love reading tarot cards!), but in a world that feels like it’s often unfeeling and chaotic, reading my horoscope can make me feel like things can still make sense, at least for a couple of minutes. And sometimes that gives me just enough hope to get on with my day. — By Mark Shrayber
