You've read the basics about Kim Rogers-Gallagher in her biography, but we know you want to know more! Here, Kim dishes out the details in an exclusive interview with Horoscope.com.
Horoscope.com: When and why did you decide to pursue a career in astrology?
KRG: I think I always wanted to be an astrologer. I remember being about 13, doodling the symbols in one of those little diaries we used to have when we were kids ,with the little lock and key. It had a description of the signs in the front, and I underlined all the Sag qualities, and all the Aquarius qualities - and I didn't even know I had the Moon and the Ascendant in Aquarius! Then, when I was about, oh, the early 80s, a friend did one of those computerized charts for me, and I was AMAZED! I started reading introductory books and putting it all together, and then, a few years later, I got a teacher and it really took off. I've always been a writer, though - my major in college was English - so I think I began to think seriously about astrology as a career when my first article was published in Welcome to Planet Earth, in the mid-80s. After a few years, I just couldn't imagine doing anything else. I worked as a waitress, a bartender, a florist, as a receptionist at the YMCA - anything at nights so that I could write during the day. Then I got brave enough to do lectures around the early 90s, and the rest, as they say, is "Herstory!"
Horoscope.com: What are your favorite astrological areas of interest?
KRG: I love to teach beginners! Those lovely blank slates! They're so eager, like I was, just dying to know everything, all at once! I also love to work with Chiron, a comet that orbits between Saturn and Uranus, and I love doing Composite charts - it's a blend of two or more charts. And of course, I love to write, about celebs - that's great fun! - and lectures at conferences! The more, the better. I think the largest crowd I've had was 500 or 600 people, and it was amazing! Talk about a rush! I love to make them laugh!
Horoscope.com: What inspires you in your daily life?
KRG: That's easy: my critters. I have three cats and a dog - and some polliwogs, right now that I rescued from our pool - but oh, yeah, animals are the love of my life - the only thing I love more than astrology. I would literally do anything for an animal. I figured it out, and over the course of my life, I've taken in and fostered and/or kept about 60 cats, at least 10 dogs, a bunch of ferrets, birds, wild critters - you name it.
Horoscope.com: Tell us about challenge that astrology helped you overcome.
KRG: That's a tough one, because it happens all the time. Just being able to look at your chart and see that you're right to feel a certain way - it's the "validation" of your feelings that I love, being able to understand that it's all right to have the emotions you have. It's just what you do with what the planets toss your way that really makes the difference.
Horoscope.com: Beyond the basics like food, shelter, and love, what are some things you can't live without?
KRG: Well, my critters, of course. I could never, ever live without animals. All living things, really. Trees, birds, just the other little life forms on the planet. And books! My books are like living things to me. I just finished reading The Complete Sherlock Holmes - 1400 pages! Oh, and I also tend to be a bit of a TV addict. I love certain shows so much that I sometimes dream about the characters, as if they were my friends! I actually cried when they took NYPD Blue and Third Watch off the air. I love drama - not a sitcom kinda gal. I was addicted to ER way back when, too. Lately, it's Saving Grace and The Closer - oh, and Dexter, and The Tudors! And House! What a character! And, of course, I need my friends - my real, tried and true friends. I'd do anything for them.
Horoscope.com: Tell us a lesser-known fact about you.
KRG: I LOVE the Society for Creative Anachronism, or the SCA, especially my yearly jaunts to Pennsic! I've been a member for years, and every year, there's a huge "medieval Woodstock" called Pennsic that goes on for two weeks. I have my own medieval tent, and more "garb" or costumes - gowns with long pointed sleeves, like from Lord of the Rings - than actual clothing. It's the most wonderful place on the world - and you get to "live" there for two weeks and be a Lady, or a Knight. It's really magical at night, with no electricity - just bonfires and torches, and people walking down the roads in cloaks. Makes me want to go now just talking about it!
Horoscope.com: If you could go out to brunch with any three people, alive or dead, who would you invite, and why?
KRG: Sherlock Holmes, or his creator, if he were unavailable, Bill Clinton, and Queen Elizabeth. I just LOVE accents, especially English and French accents, and Holmes was just so intelligent, I'd love to pick his brain. Oddly enough, I have similar reasons for wanting to have lunch with President Clinton. I've always admired him - he's got a terrific, non-stop mind...OK, and maybe I'm a little sweet on him, too, but please don't tell Hillary. She's a Scorpio, and you don't want them mad at you! Queen Elizabeth, because I think she's the strongest woman who ever lived, and definitely one of the most brilliant.
Horoscope.com: If you weren't an astrologer, what would you be?
KRG: I can't imagine. Definitely still a writer, of some kind. Or, I might own a shelter for animals, or be a lobbyist for the environment and for critters of all kinds.
